In 2002 iRobot launched Roomba, a round robot vacuum. It had no face, no voice, no map, and worked almost primitively: turn on collision, cover the room in a spiral path. Yet in an era when robots lived in labs and factories, it made a decision everyone underestimated—selling robots into ordinary homes.
There was no dazzling AI behind Roomba. Navigation relied on collision sensors and a clumsy-but-effective rule set: change direction when you bump, change zone after a few circles. Crude by today's standards, but exactly right then—no expensive sensors, no complex algorithms, cost held at ordinary-appliance level. And "good enough" matters more than "looks smart".
Its success reshaped the industry's imagination of consumer robots. Roomba became a hit overnight; robot vacuums went from novelty to common appliance, and iRobot created a multi-billion-dollar category. Deeper still, these machines ran in homes day after day, accumulating real household data—room shapes, furniture positions, usage habits—practical soil for later navigation tech and home-robot evolution.
Roomba also demonstrated a product philosophy: technology need not wait for humanoids; deliver reliability in one narrow but real need first, and value follows. Later home and service robots have more or less followed this "ship, then evolve" route.
Looking back, Roomba's historical significance lies not in technical breakthroughs but in market education. It turned "robots entering every home" from slogan to reality and got the consumer-robot track truly running. When humanoid robots dominate today's discussion, that little disc spinning on living-room floors in 2002 is the earliest prelude.
