Sora
On April 26, 2026, the Sora web and application experiences stopped operating. The user-facing page no longer encouraged another prompt; it explained timelines, data, and export. OpenAI scheduled the API sunset separately for September 24, leaving developers a transition period after the consumer product had closed. This was not one switch going dark. It was a staged withdrawal.
For creators, shutdown first became an information-management project. Generated clips, project records, and workflows dependent on Sora had to move before their windows closed. A model output might look like an ordinary downloadable video, but the surrounding work could include prompt versions, asset relationships, review records, and team links. Export could preserve the media without preserving the way it had been made. On another service, the same prompt, character, or camera instruction would not produce a stable substitute.
OpenAI’s help material confirmed which services would stop, when they would stop, and how users should handle their data. It did not provide one auditable commercial explanation. Video inference cost, abuse governance, copyright exposure, and product strategy all formed part of the surrounding environment, but they should not be converted into a causal ledger supposedly proved by official financial data. The confirmed result was enough: a consumer product once treated as a flagship entrance closed while demand for the underlying capability still existed.
The different dates for the web product, application, and API exposed several product layers. Consumers depended on an interface, library, and community functions. Developers depended on a stable endpoint and a migration deadline. Underlying research could still be recombined inside other products. The disappearance of an app carrying one name did not mean video models stopped developing. It demonstrated that the persistence of a capability and the persistence of an entrance were separate questions.
Only seven months earlier, Sora 2 had used a standalone app and feed to expand the consumer setting for generated video. By April, the product team’s task was to help users leave. For buyers and creators, that reversal produced a requirement more useful than another leaderboard: evaluating video AI meant not only saving outputs, but preparing to carry a workflow away when a supplier changed direction. Sora’s final generation task was to make its users generate an exit route.
